2009 Kentucky Derby Contenders Odds at BetUS.com have the Jeff Mullins trained colt, I Want Revenge, listed as the favorite to take home the $1.2 million top prize at +300 on the moneyline.

Friesan Fire comes to Kentucky after dominating the one mile Fair Grounds Race Course in New Orleans, Louisiana. The horse has won his last three races — all at the Fair Grounds — in sometimes less than stellar track conditions. He took the Lecomte Stakes on January 10th, the Risen Star Stakes on February 9th, and the Louisiana Derby on March 14th.

Friesan Fire was sired by 1992 Horse of the Year, A.P. Indy, and came out of Austrailian dam, Bollinger. A.P. Indy won both the Belmont and the Breeders' Cup Classic in 1992, demonstrating great endurance as the two races have a combined length of 2.75 miles. Indy was sired by 1977 Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew.

Bollinger proved to be an effective racer as well, winning group 1,2, and 3 races in her native Austrailia.

Friesan Fire is also a distant relative, from both bloodlines, of one of horse racing's greatest thoroughbreds, 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat.

Fire, who clocked five furlongs in an impressive :57 4/5 at Churchill Downs on the 27th, is trained by Larry Jones of Hopkinsville, Kentucky. Jones has trained the past two Derby runner-ups in Hard Spun and Eight Belles.

Riding Friesan Fire on Saturday will be Panamanian jockey, Gabriel Saez. Saez was named the top apprentice jockey in Panama in 2005 before moving to the United States in early 2006. He cut his teeth at Delaware Park and caught the eye of Jones in doing so. He rode Proud Spell, also trained by Jones, to first place at Kentucky Oaks in 2008, and he piloted the unfortunate Eight Belles to a second place finish at last year's Kentucky Derby. The filly, despite her sad conclusion, proved to be better than several other Kentucky Derby Entries.
