2010 Kentucky Derby Favorites: The 136th Kentucky Derby is a mere two days away and the field and post positions are now set. While yesterday's post draw did not go well for some of the favorites, the odds remain largely the same heading into the first leg of the Triple Crown series. Lookin At Lucky is still the leader of SPORTSBETTING.com's 2010 Kentucky Derby Favorites at 2 to 1 odds, despite drawing the rail for this weekend's race.
Lookin At Lucky has put together an impressive early career, winning six of his eight races, including the Cash Call Futurity
and Rebel Stakes. He also took third at the Santa Anita Derby earlier this month in his final Derby prep run.
Lucky, who is trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, has also won two races from post position one; however, that did not provide any consolation to Baffert when his star pupil drew gate one yesterday.
"This horse can't catch a break. We named him wrong," Baffert said. "It is what it is. You can't worry about that. You've got to break well. If he doesn't break well then you're screwed."
Despite Lucky's unlucky draw, he fared better than Sidney's Candy, the second favorite among this year's Derby entries at 4 to 1 odds. Candy, which won the Santa Anita Derby, drew post 20 for Saturday's race. If post one is uncomfortable territory, than gate 20 is on the threshold of Hades. Big Brown did win the 2008 Run for the Roses starting from the far outside, but he was the the first horse to do it since Clyde Van Dusen managed the improbable in 1929.
The lone filly in this year's field, Devil May Care, presently listed at 6 to 1 odds to win the Derby, drew post 11 for this weekend's start. While not the most prime position, it certainly leaves the horse a good opportunity. Since 1989, eight horses have won after starting from the middle portion of the field, including Sunday Silence (10), Unbridled (8), Lil E. Tee (10), Go for Gin (8), Smarty Jones (13), Giacomo (10), Barbaro (8), and Mine That Bird (8).
