Online racebook Bodog.com has West Side Bernie listed as a 35 to 1 long shot (Bet $100 to win $3500) to win the Kentucky Derby 2009.
“Though he isn't bred to go this far, perhaps his solid two turn foundation will carry him the extra eighth of a mile,” stated VegasInsider.com Horse Racing Analyst Anthony Stabile when asked to comment on the 2009 Kentucky Derby contender West Side Bernie. “Would like him more if he hadn't drawn so poorly and I'm not the biggest Kelly Breen fan. I doubt he can win but it wouldn't surprise me totally if he grabbed a share.”
West Side Bernie is trained by Kelly Breen and will be ridden by Jockey Stewart Elliot. The odds makers are not giving West Side Bernie any chance of winning the Kentucky Derby 2009 despite drawing the first gate.

This is the stuff I thrive on. I'm thrilled to be here and to be in it.I always wonder what I would have done had I stayed with wrestling," said Breen, who turns 40 on May 13. I could have been quite good at it. But this is what I wanted to do. So I quit sports and started riding. I wanted to be around horses. Some kids want to be astronauts at 12 and then at 17 they're asking you if you want paper or plastic at the checkout line. I'm doing what I always wanted to do."
