American Lion has competed in six races going back to his Maiden Special Weight last year. He has won three of those 
events, including the Hollywood Prevue in January as well as the Grade 3 Illinois Derby in April. American Lion has finished outside the top three just one time, that being a fourth place run at San Felipe this year.
American Lion's pedigree would suggest distance as he was sired by Breeders' Cup Classic champion Tiznow. Tiznow has produced multiple Grade 1 stakes winners, some of them taking first in races up to 1 1/2 miles. His broodmare sire, Storm Cat, was also a Grade 1 stakes winner.
American Lion drew post position seven earlier this week, leaving Irish trainer Eoin Harty feeling fortunate.
"I'm quite happy," Harty said. "It doesn't change the way the horse is going to run one way or the other, seven is [just] a lucky number for me."
