Kentucky Derby 2010: Dean's Kitten 40 to 1 Derby Odds: A second Mike Maker trained colt will make an appearance in today's 136th Kentucky Derby, that being Dean's Kitten. The chestnut colt is currently listed at 40 to 1 Derby odds at online racebook Bodog.com. The first leg of the Triple Crown is scheduled to get underway at 6:24pm ET today at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.
While Dean's Kitten resume does not contain many wins, it is full of action. The horse has competed in 11 races since
last April, taking first in three of those, including the Grade 2 Lane's End in March.
Dean's Kitten comes from primarily a turf pedigree as his sire Kitten's Joy, was a multiple Grade 1 turf winner; however, his broodmare sire, Ida, was a standout performer in multiple dirt track races.
Maker's other horse, Stately Victor, garnered post position six for today's race, which was less than pleasing to the veteran trainer. He was happy with Kitten's gate 8 draw, though.
"I think Dean's Kitten drew great," Maker said. "I didn't think post position would be as much of an issue for him. He's not a great big horse and he has a better chance of overcoming any problems he may encounter from there."
Louisiana jockey Robby Albarado will be atop Dean's Kitten in today's Derby run. Albarado has tasted Triple Crown race success, piloting Curlin to the 2007 Preakness title. He fell just short to Street Sense in the 2007 Derby, also aboard Curlin.
