Kentucky Derby 2010: Ice Box 12 to 1 Derby Odds: The Robert LaPenta owned colt Ice Box will make his bid for Churchill Downs glory this afternoon when the 136th running of the Kentucky Derby gets underway at 6:24pm ET on NBC. Kentucky Derby betting experts at online bookmaker SBGglobal.com presently have Ice Box listed at 12 to 1 Derby Odds.
Ice Box broke his maiden last October after four cracks at it, and he has gone on to win two of his three races since. While 
he did take fifth place at the Fountain of Youth in February, the colt rebounded with the top spot in the Grade 1 Florida Derby in March.
Ice Box, which is trained by Nick Zito, has an excellent pedigree, especially for the 1 1/4 mile distance that the Derby provides. His sire, Pulpit, took fourth place in his Derby run and his broodmare sire, Tabasco Cat, won the 1994 Preakness and Belmont. Zito believes that Ice Box' genetics will give him a good chance this evening.
"He's got great breeding: his mother (Spice Island) won a race going a mile and a half," Zito said. "It's inside him…he had three mile and an eighth races this winter and won two of them."
Riding Ice Box today will be Panamanian jockey Jose Lezcano. The 25 year old Lezcano has had two previous Derby mounts, but neither finished inside the top 10.
Ice Box will start the Derby in post position 2, next to favorite Lookin At Lucky.
