Kentucky Derby 2010 Picks

Kentucky Derby 2010 Picks: Almost never, do I go with the race favorite and this years Derby is no exception. Lookin At Lucky is the consensus morning line favorite at all major online sportsbooks inclucing BetUS.com, the book I am currently looking at. BetUS lists Lookin at Lucky as a 15-to-4. I like Sidney's Candy better than Lookin at Lucky. Sidney's Candy's odds are -razor-thin- close to Lookin At Lucky, at 4-to-1. Keep in mind that Sidney's Candy beat Lookin At Lucky in the prestigous Santa Anita Stakes earlier in April.

Kentucky Derby 2010 PicksMy pick for today's derby is Awesome Act, a son of Awesome Again and currently is 17th on the list of graded stakes earners. Awesome Act won his 2010 debut, the $250K Grade 3 Gotham Stakes on March 6. I believe he could be a surprise factor in the Derby.

My second pick is, as previously mentioned, Sidney's Candy . Undefeated as a 3-year-old, Sidney's Candy is a Candy Ride sired colt. Trained by John Sadley, is one of many Derby contenders this year who employ a frontrunning style.

To complete my trifecta, I go with American Lion , at 24-to-1, to surprise a few folks. American Lion, son of Tiznow, is really coming into his own at the right time. He won twice as a 2-year-old – including the $100,000 Grade 3 Hollywood Prevue Stakes on Nov. 21 – but did not find the winner's circle again until the dirt-run $500,000 Gr. 3 Illinois Derby at Hawthorne Park on April 3. He hasn't faced the same level of competition as, say, Lookin at Lucky, but is capable of a strong performance.
