2012 Kentucky Derby Favorites

by Matt Foust on Tuesday, May 1st, 2012

kentucky derby 2012 bodemeisterThe 138th Kentucky Derby could be one of the most exciting in recent memory with so many strong contenders emerging from the key Derby prep races. Suffice it to say there are no shortage of potential winners in the 2012 field with colts like Bodemeister, Union Rags, Gemologist, and Alpha vying for victory in the first and most prestigious leg of the Triple Crown series. According to the latest Horse Racing Odds, the list of 2012 Kentucky Derby Favorites starts with Bodemeister and Union Rags, though; the two colts are presently drawing +500 moneyline odds to win Saturday’s Run for the Roses.

Bodemeister (+500): Bodemeister has the pedigree (sired by 2003 Belmont winner Empire Maker) and training (Bob Baffert – seven Triple Crown series wins) that screams Derby favorite. The Bay colt also added to already high expectations when it took first at the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby on April 12th.

Union Rags (+500): Since breaking his maiden in July of last year Union Rags has competed in five graded stakes races. The son of Dixie Union and Tempo took first in three of those five races, including the Grade 1, one mile Champagne Stakes. Union Rags took second at the 1 1/16 miles Breeders’ Cup Juvenile last November, but the colt placed an unexpected third at the Florida Derby in late March.

Gemologist (+700): Todd Pletcher could have his second Derby winner in the Tiznow sired colt, but there are still some questions about the undefeated WindStar Farm’s product. Gemologist has only competed in two graded stakes events; however, it did win both of them, taking the Grade II Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes last November and the Grade I Wood Memorial on April 7th.

Alpha (+1000): A bad start at last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile resulted in an 11th place for the Kiaran Mclaughlin trained colt, but that finish proved the exception not the rule. Alpha, who was sired by 2006 Preakness winner Bernardini, took second at the Grade II Champagne Stakes (one mile), third at the Grade III Withers Stakes (1 1/16 miles), and second at the Grade I Wood Memorial (1 1/8 miles).
