Flying Private earned his way into the Kentucky Derby 2009 with a second in the Lane's End but he only has one win in 10 career starts. The Kentucky Derby odds makers at internet sportsbook BetUS.com have listed Flying Private as a +4000 long shot (Bet $100 to win $4000).“It wouldn't be the first Saturday in May without a Lukas sighting, now would it?” stated VegasInsider.com Horse Racing Expert Anthony Stabile when asked to comment on the chance Flying Private has in the Kentucky Derby 2009. “Can you believe they actually wanted to run this horse? I can't, but I'm not surprised because this goes to show that there isn't a cure for Derby Fever!” Flying Private is trained by D. Wayne Lukas and will be running out of the 20th post and be ridden by jockey Robby Albarado, winner of the 2003 Jockey Club Gold Cup on Mineshaft. Albarado has ridden in Derby eight times with his best results were a third-place finish on Steppenwolfer in 2006 and Curlin in 2007. He also rode Steppenwolfer to a fourth-place finish in the Belmont Stakes. "I like my chances better than most people," stated D. Wayne Lukas about Flying Private’s chances in the Kentucky Derby 2009. "Of course, you have to be optimistic or you shouldn't be in (the race). But he's as good as a couple of the horses I've had who have won here. I feel as good about him as I did Charismatic, and better than Grindstone."
