 The odds makes at online racebook SBG Global have Papa Clem listed as a +2000 odds long shot to win the Kentucky Derby 2009. Papa Clem won the Arkansas Derby after finishing 2nd in both the Louisiana Derby (G2) at Fair Grounds and Robert B. Lewis Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita Park. On April 30, Papa Clem ran three furlongs in :36 breezing at Churchill Downs. “From a numbers point of view, the pros outweigh the cons but this colt really seems to be having a tough time since arriving in Louisville,” stated VegasInsider.com Kentucky Derby 2009 Horse Racing Analyst Anthony Stabile when asked to comment on Papa Clem. “The same way some horses head into a race going the right way some can go sour at the wrong time. I'm thinking that's the case here.” Trained by Gary Stute, Papa Clem is owned by breeder Bo Hirsch and will be riding out of the 7th posted by jockey Rafael Bejarano. Papa Clem is 2-2-0 in four starts when Bejarano was the jockey. "If it was a fantasy jockey league and I had the first pick, there's no doubt I would take Rafael," stated Papa Clem trainer Gary Stute about his Kentucky Derby 2009 jockey. "I realize there are a lot of great riders in the race, but I figured last Saturday was like the jockeys' last blowout (before the Derby), and they had six stakes races at Hollywood Park. Well, all he did was win five." Stabile continued: “Maybe it's too much, too soon for him or perhaps Stute is just doing too much with him.
