The 2012 Kentucky Derby will take place this Saturday, May 5th at the legendary Churchill Downs race track in Louisville. The event is scheduled for a 5:00pm ET start and will be broadcast live on NBC. Excitement around this year’s race is high with several horses being viewed as potential candidates to win the first leg of the Triple Crown series. Among the strongest 2012 Kentucky Derby Contenders are Union Rags (+450), Bodemeister (+450), Dullahan (+700), and Gemologist (+700), but the odds makers are also keen on a number of other colts, including Alpha (+1000), Creative Cause (+1000), I’ll Have Another (+1300), and Hansen (+1400).
Bodemeister, Union Rags, and Gemologist are the biggest entries in the 2012 Kentucky Derby, but this year’s field is the strongest in years and the latest Horse Racing Odds reflect that fact. The following is a quick run down of a few potential winners and what they have done leading up to Saturday’s race.
Dullahan (+700): Comes from solid bloodlines on both sides as his ancestors include Unbridled, Mr. Prospector, and Smart Strike. Took first in the Blue Grass Stakes in mid-April and also won the 1 1/16 miles, Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity last November. A veteran of eight races, but six of those took place last year.
Creative Cause (+1000): The Giant’s Causeway sired colt has four wins in eight career races, but has never finished worse than third. Creative Cause last ran at the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby in early April where he took second place behind fellow Derby entrant I’ll Have Another. Creative Cause has competed in four Grade 1 races so Saturday’s competition level should not intimidate him.
Alpha (+1000): Sired by 2006 Preakness Stakes winner Bernardini, Alpha has never raced on anything but a dirt track. The bay colt did produce a lackluster 11th place finish at last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, but he has two wins (Grade 3 Withers Stakes, Count Fleet Stakes) and one second place result (Grade 1 Wood Memorial) since that poor run.
I’ll Have Another (+1300): I’ll Have Another has five races on his resume and four of those were graded stakes events. Produced a pedestrian sixth place finish at the Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes last September, but comes into Saturday’s Derby on a two race win streak after having won the Grade 2 Robert B. Lewis Stakes (February) and the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby (November).
Hansen (+1400): Another colt with great pedigree from both dam and sire as its bloodlines include Unbridled, Storm Cat, and A.P. Indy. Hansen has competed in six races, taking first in four of them, including the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, and second in the other two. Most recently placed second to Dullahan at the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes.
