2012 Kentucky Derby Post Positions & Odds

kentucky derby 2012 bodemeisterBarring any unforeseen injuries or late week mishaps, the field is set for the 2012 Kentucky Derby. The legendary race will feature 20 horses and after yesterday’s post draw, owners and jockeys now know where they will start in the 138th Run for the Roses. 2012 Kentucky Derby Post Positions & Odds were not altered a great deal following Wednesday’s draw as most of the favorites, including Union Rags, Bodemeister, and Gemologist, garnered decent starting posts. The latest Horse Racing Odds have Bodemeister, who will jump from Post 6, listed as a 4 to 1 favorite to win Saturday’s race.

Post position is key in the Kentucky Derby due to the unusually high number of horses competing in the race. Most owners and riders, with the exception of Calvin Borel, prefer to be off the rail as some horses get spooked/trapped/lost in the shuffle when starting out of Post 1. The position does not eliminate a colt from contention, after all, it has yielded two winners (Ferdinand – 1986, Winning Colors – 1988) since 1970, but it is not considered a prime spot.

If the far inside is undesirable than the far outside is pure anathema. No rider or owner wants Post 20 at the Derby as it is nearly impossible to win the race from that starting position. Only one horse has ever won the Kentucky Derby from the from outside, and he was an exceptional specimen. Big Brown, a heavy favorite, covered the distance back in 2008 and won the Run for the Roses with a time of 2:01.82.

With those two things in mind, yesterday’s post draw went well for this year’s favorites. Bodemeister garnered Post 6, a spot which is far enough out to avoid trouble, but, somewhat surprisingly, has not yielded a winner since 1957 (Iron Liege). Union Rags (17 to 4 odds) will start from Post 4, the same gate that produced 2010 Derby winner Super Saver and 1977 Derby/Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew.

The Todd Pletcher trained Gemologist (25 to 4 odds) also ended up in a good spot after securing Post 15. Five of the last 12 Derby winners have started between gates 13 and 16, including last year’s winner Animal Kingdom (Post 16).

Also of note is the Post 3 draw for Take Charge Indy (15 to 1 odds). The A.P. Indy sired colt will be piloted by the aforementioned Borel, who is, no doubt, happy about being positioned so close to the rail. Borel has been aboard three of the last five Derby winners, riding Street Sense (Post 7), Mine That Bird (Post 8), and Super Saver (Post 4) to victory at Churchill Downs.
