2011 Kentucky Derby Prop Bets

by Matt Foust on Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

The lead up to the 137th Kentucky Derby hits the final turn this week as the grand event is scheduled to take place Saturday, May 7th at the legendary Churchill Downs racetrack in Louisville, Kentucky. The post-draw will happen later today, which may affect the odds on some of the favorites, such as Dialed In and Uncle Mo, but it will not influence the majority of the 2011 Kentucky Derby Prop Bets that racing fans can currently wager on. The following are just a few of the proposition bets on board for Saturday's Run for the Roses spectacular.

Will a Horse Win The 2011 Triple Crown: The odds are certainly against a horse completing a Triple Crown run considering the 2011 Kentucky Derby Prop Betsfeat has only been accomplished 11 times since the institution of the series. The last horse to take the top spot in all three legs of the Triple Crown was Affirmed in 1978. Affirmed joined Secretariat and Seattle Slew as the third horse to complete the trifacta in the 1970's. Three racers also did it in the 1930's while four horses managed to earn Triple Crown honors in the 1940's. Sir Barton became the first Triple Crown winner when he won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes in 1919.

Kentucky Derby – Official Winning Time (Over/Under 2:02.15): Since 2000, six horses have bested the 2:02.15 mark, the last being Big Brown's 2:01.82 run in 2008. Super Saver and Mine That Bird produced winning times of 2:04.45 and 2:02.66, respectively, the past two years in less than ideal conditions. Scattered thunder storms are projected for the Louisville area on Saturday, which means the track could, once again, be a little bit sloppy. If that holds true, the Over 2:02.15 represents great value at -220 odds.

Will Any Horse Win Two of the Three Triple Crown Races (Kentucky Derby/Preakness Stakes/Belmont Stakes): While the Triple Crown has proven difficult to capture, several horses have nabbed two of the three big races races in recent years. In fact, since Silver Charm won the Derby and Preakness Stakes in 1997, eight horses have won a combination of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness and/or the Preakness and Belmont, including War Emblem, Funny Cide, Smarty Jones, Afleet Alex, and Big Brown.
