2010 Triple Crown Odds: With the 2010 Kentucky Derby in the books, attention has now turned to the Preakness Stakes and Super Saver's Triple Crown potential. The colt did not enter the Derby with a great deal of fanfare, listed at 12 to 1 odds, but Saver figures to be one of the favorites in the Run for the Black-Eyed Susans on May 15th. Online racebook Bodog.com does not like the horse's Triple Crown chances, though, as their odds for him pulling off the feat are presently listed at -700 on the negative.
Super Saver proved two things in winning the Derby: that he can run well in sloppy conditions and that distance is not an issue. The one and one-quarter mile race appeared to have little effect on the colt as jockey Calvin Borel guided him down the rail to a relatively easy victory.
The WinStar Farm's horse should have little trouble with the shorter one and three-sixteenths mile Preakness. Obviously, the one and one half mile Belmont will pose the biggest challenge, but Super Saver does have a distance pedigree. His sire Maria's Mon has produced 2.5 mile winners and his broodmare sire, A.P. Indy, won the Belmont in 1992.
History will be working against the colt as no horse has won the Triple Crown since Affirmed pulled off the trifecta in 1978. However, four horses did win both the Derby and Preakness in the last decade, those being War Emblem, Funny Cide, Smarty Jones, and Big Brown. Point Given and Afleet Alex also won two of the three Triple Crown races in the early and mid 2000's, both taking Derby and Belmont titles.
Calvin Borel, who will have Super Saver's mount at Pimlico, predicted a Triple Crown win for the himself and the horse at the conclusion of the Derby. Borel did win the Derby and Preakness last year aboard Mine That Bird and Rachel Alexandra, respectively, but he placed third in the Belmont, also riding Mine That Bird.
