Undoubtedly the mystery contender for the 2011 Kentucky Derby, is Nehro, currently coming off on the BetUS futures board at 7-to-1 odds. This three year old son of 1992 horse of the year Mineshaft is out of Zayat Stables and trained by Steven Asmussen. Riding Nehro will be jockey Corey Nakatani.
Nehro, with a 94 Beyer-rating has had an impressive year with back to back second place finishes in the G-2 Louisiana Derby, March 26, and G-1 Arkansas Derby, April 16. Nehro nearly caught winner Archacharch at Oaklawn who won by a head. Nehro will post from Gate-19, not exactly a good draw. Nehro caught the attention of horse fans when he won his maiden at Oaklawn, closing from up to 12 lengths to win by 4.5.
At 11-to-2 odds, Nehro is my Kentucky Derby Pick to finish in the top-2 Win-Place or Show.
Nehro's first big grade race came in the Louisiana Derby following his Oaklawn maiden where he nearly caught derby entry Pants on Fire whose win was a major upset. Of course nearly unknown Nehro was coming off 36-1 odds for the race. Needing more earnings to have any chance of making entry in the 2011 Kentucky Derby, Nehro was sent back to Oaklawn for the Arkansas Derby.
