A number of pundits liked the Flower Alley sired I’ll Have Another going into yesterday’s 2012 Kentucky Derby, but some viewed the colt’s Post 19 start as a potential problem. Starting from the far outside is typically a disadvantage, but I’ll Have Another and jockey Mario Gutierrez, who was making his Derby debut, overcame their gate and a strong field to win the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby in 2:01.83. Horse Racing Odds and had the colt listed at 14 to 1 odds yesterday morning, resulting in a $32.50 take for every $2.00 wagered on an I’ll Have Another 2012 Kentucky Derby results victory.
Trainer Doug O’Neill has long been a force on the Southern California racing circuit, but he had yet to make a mark in a Triple Crown event going into yesterday’s Derby. O’Neill believed he had a potential winning combination in I’ll Have Another and young jockey Mario Gutierrez, and the pair proved him right in rather dramatic fashion.
Gutierrez hung back the majority of the race, leaving enough in I’ll Have Another’s tank for a hard charge down the final stretch. The colt came from outside after the final turn and reeled in the flagging Bodemeister over the final 300 yards to capture the coveted Blanket of Roses. The victory marked I’ll Have Another’s third consecutive win as it also captured first at the Grade 2 Robert B. Lewis Stakes in early February and the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby on April 7th. Gutierrez had the mount in those races as well.
Bodemeister, who, along with Union Rags, was favored at 9 to 2 odds to win the 1 1/4 miles Derby, ran an exceptional race, but the colt tired near the end after setting a blistering early pace. It did hold on for second place, though, just beating out another late charger in the Dale Romans trained Dullahan. Bodemeister’s second place finish resulted in a $6.20 payout ($2.00 wager). Dullahan, who was piloted by three time Derby winner Kent Desormeaux, earned its backers $7.20 for every $2.00 wagered with its third place finish.
Union Rags finished out of the money in seventh place after getting boxed in in the early going. Another favorite, the previously undefeated Gemologist (13 to 2 odds), finished a distant 16th.
