The 134th Run for the Black Eyed Susans is on the horizon as the 2009 Kentucky Derby is already in the books. The Preakness Stakes, which follows the Derby as the second race in the Triple Crown Series, is set to take place this Saturday, May 16th at 4:30pm ET. The prestigious race will be broadcast live on NBC. The favorite to win the event, at 9/5 odds, is filly Rachel Alexandra.

2009 Preakness Predictions at Bodog.com have Derby runner-up, Pioneerof the Nile, listed as the second favorite in Saturday's race. The Bob Baffert trained colt is presently at 15/4 odds.

Pioneerof the Nile, one of the favorites to win the Kentucky Derby, has been a formidable horse of late. Preceding his second place running at Churchill Downs, he had won four straight races at California synthetic tracks Santa Anita and Hollywood Park.

The Zayat Stable owned horse had a few detractors entering the Derby based upon his lack of dirt track experience, but he more than proved them to be wrong with his performance two weekends ago.

Pioneerof was confirmed for Pimlico, also a dirt track, this week after turning in solid practice runs at Churchill Downs on Monday. Baffert expressed to the Preakness' official website that the Derby run did not have any lingering effects on his trainee.

"He worked great and went over the track really well," Baffert said. "We finally got a nice track. He bounced out of the race great and I don't see any side effects from the Derby; he looks strong. It looks like he's sitting on another great performance."

Garrett Gomez, who piloted Pioneerof the Nile in this year's Derby, will guide the horse again at this weekend's 2009 Preakness Predictions. Gomez is the top earning North American rider over the last three years and is a two time Eclipse Award winner (2007, 2008).
