2009 Preakness Picks at Bodog.com have Terrain listed at 35 to 1 odds to win the 134th running of the Preakness Stakes. Terrain, a three year old gelding, did not participate in the Kentucky Derby and took a fourth place finish in his last race, the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland on April 11th.
Terrain's trainer, Albert Stall Jr., explained the horse's absence from the Run for the Roses.
"We skipped the Derby because he's a gelding [a castrated horse], and it's a war and that's all," Stall said. "We're just trying to have a nice horse for down the road."
His nonattendance at horse racing's most celebrated event may have some questioning his chances at Pimlico this weekend. Do not count his Preakness jockey, Jeremy Rose, among his detractors.
"He's run against the best company around and hasn't gotten beaten that far by them, just a couple of lengths" said Rose, who piloted Afleet Alex to the 2005 Preakness title. "I like his running style; he seems like he can come from mid-pack with a late run at the end, and in the past couple of years I've had horses like this that I thought had a good shot at the top three. I'll tell you, of course, like a lot of guys, I wish the filly [Rachel Alexandra] wasn't in there, but right now I think my horse is equal to anything else."
"He's drawn well [number six post], has a capable jock and trainer…if the pace is hot stranger things have happened" Stabile said. "I won't go as far as to say he is a legitimate win candidate but his price makes him awfully appealing."
The 134th Preakness Stakes is scheduled to take place tomorrow (May16th) at 4:30pm ET on NBC. Historic Pimlico Race Course, home of the Run for the Black Eyed Susans, is located in Baltimore, Maryland.
