2009 Preakness Predictions at online bookmaker Bodog.com have the D. Wayne Lukas trained colt Luv Gov listed at 35 to 1 odds to win the Run for the Black Eyed Susans. The horse did not race in the Derby but won the first race of his career in his Maiden Special Weight at Churchill Downs on May 2nd.
Prior to his victory at Churchill Downs, Luv Gov had finished second in three straight races. His recent success prompted Hall of Fame trainer Lukas to enter him into the Preakness Stakes.
"He's one of those horses that we thought a lot of and then he made us wonder a little bit," Lukas said. "He's such a big, growthy horse. His pedigree is just screaming distance [sired by 10 Most Wanted], and the light bulb kind of went on for him lately. That son of a gun is starting to do good. He ran a bang-up race to Summer Bird in Hot Springs and he came back on Derby day and his numbers for that race are pretty darn good in relation to the ones who ran a little later in the Derby. A horse that is improving at this time of year is always dangerous."
Despite Lukas' belief in his late entry three year old colt, 2009 Preakness Predictions expert Anthony Stabile at VegasInsider.com views Luv Gov in the same light that he views Lukas other Preakness entry, Flying Private.
"After all these years, you'd think Lukas would have learned his lesson," Stabile said. "Thank God this horse didn't keep the filly [Rachel Alexandra] out of the race because it would have been a travesty."
NBC will broadcast the 134th Preakness Stakes Saturday, May 16th at 4:30pm ET. The second race in the Triple Crown Series will take place at the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland.
