Preakness Picks experts at Bodog.com have installed the last place finisher at the Kentucky Derby, Flying Private, at 45 to 1odds to win the 134th Preakness Stakes. The D. Wayne Lukas trained colt has just one win in 11 career races and finished fifth in the ArkansasDerby at Oaklawn Park prior to his 19th place conclusion at Churchill Downs two weekends ago.
The Fusaichi Pegasus sired male drew the 10 post for the 134th Run for the Black Eyed Susans. A slot that Lukas seemed less than enthused about.
"The 10 is okay. I wouldn't have liked the 6,7,8,9. Bob's horse [Pioneerof the Nile] has good speed inside of him, and mine doesn't," Lukas said. "Once they put them into the gate it will be a competitive race. The one thing I did not want was the 1-hole. I was getting a little nervous."
Lukas, who indicated that Flying Private was not quite himself in Louisville, is looking to add to his list of Preakness winners with the three year old horse. The trainer first tasted victory at Pimlico in 1980 when Codex took the Run for the Black Eyed Susans. He has trained four winners since, the latest being Charismatic in 1999.
"We didn't get what we expected in the Derby" Lukas said. "It wasn't him, but we were optimistic about getting it done in the Derby so we are hopeful the real Flying Private will show up in the Preakness."
Preakness Picks expert Anthony Stabile at VegasInsider.com does not concur with Lukas' opinion of the horse, stating: "It is amazing how big D. Wayne's ego is. This horse doesn't even belong in the undercard."
The 134th Preakness Stakes will take place at 4:30pm ET this Saturday, May 16th at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. The event will be broadcast live on NBC.
