2010 Preakness: Jackson Bend 12 to 1 Preakness Odds: The Nick Zito trained Jackson Bend will makes its 11 career start today when it tackles the Pimlico Racetrack in Baltimore, Maryland. Jackson Bend, which ran at the Derby two weekends ago, is currently listed at 12 to 1 Preakness Odds at Sportsbook.com. Catch the colt in action at the 135th Preakness Stakes at 4:30pm ET on NBC.
Jackson Bend had an impressive streak going into the 136th Kentucky Derby, but the colt produced an unremarkable
12th place showing at Churchill Downs. Prior to the Derby, Bend had not finished worst than second in nine starts, including five wins. However, most of that success was achieved in races under a mile in length. The horse does have some distance pedigree, though, as his broodmare sire was 1994 Preakness and Belmont winner Tabasco Cat.
Perhaps a dryer track and a slighty shorter 1 3/16 mile run will do the colt well this afternoon. Jackson Bend will start the race from gate six, a post Zito seemed rather lukewarm about.
"It was okay (the post draw)," Zito said. "He's just got to get away good. If he can get away good, we'll be all right."
Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith will have Jackson Bend's mount today, giving him his 12th Preakness ride. Smith rode last year's Derby winner, Mine That Bird, to a second place finish in 2009 Run for the Black-Eyed Susans. The New Mexico native is most famous for piloting the legendary Zenyatta to 16 career wins in 16 starts.
