Preakness 2010: Northern Giant 30 to 1 Preakness Odds: Despite his name, Northern Giant has failed to strike fear into the hearts of opposing trainers coming into today's 135th Preakness Stakes. The D. Wayne Lukas trained colt, which has just one win in nine career starts, will begin the Run for the Black-Eyed Susans from gate four. Preakness Odds at online racebook Bodog.com have the horse listed as a 30 to 1 longshot to win the second leg of the Triple Crown series.
Northern Giant could be described as a late bloomer as the colt did not break his maiden until February of this year, which
left him almost no chance at running in the Derby. However, despite taking six cracks at his Maiden Special Weight, the Westbrook Stables horse has been fairly impressive since that turn. Giant finished third at the Grade II Risen Star Stakes in late February and took second place at the Grade II Lane's End Stakes in March. The colt did finish dead last at the Grade I Arkansas Derby, though.
Northern Giant is the son of European champion Giant's Causeway and dam Jessi Take Charge. His sire was a multiple Grade I stakes winner, accumulating over $3 million in prize money, but Jessi Take Charge went unraced.
Riding Northern Giant today will be 38 year old American jockey Terry Thompson. Thompson, who has done most of his best work at Oaklawn in Arkansas, made his Triple Crown debut at Churchill Downs two weekends ago when he rode another Lukas trained horse, Dublin, to a seventh place finish.
The 2010 Preakness Stakes take place at 4:30pm ET this afternoon at the Pimlico Racetrack in Baltimore, Maryland. The race will be broadcast live on NBC.
