Super Saver charged to an early lead yesterday at Pimlico under the guidance of jockey Calvin Borel, but the colt simply did 
not have enough at the end, fading while most of the pack made a late push. Lookin At Lucky was one of those as he took over the field the last quarter-mile, holding off a game First Dude and Jackson Bend. Lucky, who will turn three later this month, was piloted by 25 year old Mexican jockey Martin Garcia.
Given Lookin At Lucky's performance at Pimlico, as well as his winning track record (seven wins in 10 races), it is almost a disappointment that the colt was unable to emerge victorious at Churchill Downs. Trainer Bob Baffert lamented the rail draw at the Derby; now everyone knows just how much. Baffert stated yesterday that the colt will not make a run at the Belmont because of the seventh place finish in the Run for the Roses.
"If we were going for the Triple Crown, I would take him (to the Belmont)," Baffert said. "But I want to take him home and freshen him up. I ran him real hard as a two year old. He deserves a little rest."
Lucky was the fifth Baffert protege to win the Preakness Stakes, tying him with D. Wayne Lukas for Preakness victories.
At 2 to 1 odds, Lookin At Lucky returned $6.80. A two dollar exacta bet on 7 and 11 brought home $188.60. A two dollar trifecta bet on 7-11-6 paid $2771. A two dollar Super on 7-11-6-5 returned a whopping $17,126.
