Preakness Stakes 2012 Morning Line

by Matt Foust on Saturday, May 19th, 2012

kentucky derby jump 2012Preakness Day has finally arrived as 11 horses will vie for the coveted Triple Crown Series title late this afternoon. Coverage of the 137th Running of the Preakness Stakes, which is hosted at the legendary Pimlico Racetrack in Baltimore, Maryland, is scheduled to begin at 4:30pm ET on NBC. The Preakness Stakes 2012 morning line has not seen much variation since Wednesday’s post draw with the latest Horse Racing Odds still favoring Derby runner up Bodemeister at +150 on the moneyline. 2012 Kentucky Derby winner I’ll Have Another is second on the odds leaderboard as a +200 moneyline play.

Despite Bodemeister’s inability to hang on to the Derby lead, bettors and pundits cannot seem to shake the colt’s performance at Churchill Downs. The son of Empire Maker left most of the field in its wake until the final stretch and even then it defied reason, hanging to finish second in spite of its incredibly taxing early effort.

With a slightly altered approach in the shorter Preakness Stakes (1 3/16 miles as opposed to the 1 1/4 miles Derby), most see Bodemeister as being too strong for the rest of the field to overcome. In addition to the colt’s tremendous natural ability, it also has the advantage of trainer Bob Baffert and jockey Mike Smith being part of its team.

Baffert has won five Preakness Stakes, the most recent title coming in 2010 with Lookin at Lucky, while Smith has piloted winners at the Kentucky Derby (2005 – Giacomo), Preakness Stakes (1993 – Prairie Bayou), and Belmont Stakes (2010 – Drosselmeyer).

If Bodemeister can be topped this evening, prognosticators see I’ll Have Another as the most likely candidate to foil the bay colt. The Doug O’Neill trained and J. Paul Reddam owned horse has won three consecutive races and it became the first Post 19 starter to ever win the Kentucky Derby.

Should O’Neill and jockey Mario Gutierrez change their tactics today (based upon Bodemeister’s run), I’ll Have Another could pull off another upset. If the colt does win today’s race, it will maintain a shot at what has proven to be an elusive Triple Crown.
