2009 Belmont Stakes Dunkirk 4 to 1 Belmont Odds: The 2009 Belmont Stakes odds makers at online racebook BetUS.com have the 11th place Kentucky Derby finisher, Dunkirk, listed at 4 to 1 odds to win the 141st running of the 2009 Belmont Stakes this weekend in Elmont, New York. The son of 1990 Kentucky Derby winner Unbridled, Dunkirk, will start Saturday's race from the No. 2 post.

Dunkirk, who is trained by Todd Pletcher (trained 2007 Belmont winner Rags to Riches), was one of the favorites going into the Derby after winning two races at Gulfstream Park (January and February) and taking second there at the Florida Derby in March. However, the colt got off to a rough start at Churchill Downs and went on to finish 11th.

Pletcher, while disappointed with the Derby result, still feels that Dunkirk is skilled enough to achieve great things this weekend.

"I felt going into the Derby this is a very good horse," Pletcher said about his chanced in the 2009 Belmont Stakes. "At the beginning of the race out of the gate, he stumbled...I felt he never ran to his capabilities. I feel he's a top quality horse, and has run well in three of his four races. The Derby, to me, I have to put a line through that race [because] he's got terrific action, a smooth, fluid strike. I stand by the fact he's a very high-quality horse."

Jockey John Velazquez will have the mount on Dunkirk for the 2009 Belmont Stakes. Velzaquez has worked with Pletcher on numerous occasions, inculding the 2007 Belmont when Rags to Riches captured first place.

Velazquez has been impressed with Dunkirk during their practices at Belmont Park and believes the horse will be a factor in the longest race in the Triple Crown Series (1.5 miles).

"He's probably the right horse, for the right distance," Velazquez said of the Belmont Picks colt. "The distance will help him more than anything else."

The Belmont Stakes will take place Saturday, June 6th at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. The race will be broadcast live on ABC, coverage is set to begin at 5:00pm ET.
