Belmont 2010 Odds: Spangled Star 30 to 1 Belmont Odds: Every race has its longshot and the 142nd Belmont Stakes is no different. Taking that title today is the Lawrence Roman owned Spangled Star. The horse is presently listed at 30 to 1 Belmont Odds at online racebook SPORTSBETTING.com. Tune into ABC at 6:30pm ET tonight to see if the colt can score a big upset in the third leg of the Triple Crown series.
Spangled Star has little on his racing resume to suggest he might be a classic calibur horse. It took the colt six tries to 
break his maiden, which he accomplished in January of this year, and he placed third in two Allowance races after that milestone. Star's shing moment came in April with a third place showing at the G3 Withers. Not the stuff of legend, but the horse does possess a solid pedigree.
Sired by stakes winner Distorted Humor, Spangled Star in a half-brother to 2003 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Funny Cide. The colt's dam, Spangled, was also graded stakes winner and showed a penchant for handling distance races.
Spangled Star's pedigree has Roman holding out hope that the horse may be a factor this evening.
"He seems to be getting better with every start," Roman said. "He's lightly raced and he's bred to go the distance."
Veteran jockey Garrett Gomez will have Spangled Star's mount in today's Triple Crown event. Gomez, who has never raced aboard Star before, will be competing in his fifth Belmont Stakes. His best finish at the event came in 2007 with Hard Spun (4th); last year he took ninth place riding Chocolate Candy.
Gomex and Spangled Star will be charging out of the second gate this evening.
