Belmont Stakes Odds Summer Bird 20 to 1 Belmont Picks: The Belmont Stakes odds makers at internet racebook SBGglobal.com have sixth place Derby finisher Summer Bird listed as a 20 to 1 Belmont Picks Odds in the race. Summer Bird, who was sired by the same Birdstone that produced Mine That Bird, broke his maiden in March and finished third at the Arkansas Derby before his run at Churchill Downs. The horse drew the No. 4 post for Saturday's grand event.

Summer Bird, according to his owner Dr. K. K. Jayaraman, took a while to demonstrate any sort of racing aptitude, and as a result, his relatively successful career has been more than a surprise.

"We had Summer Bird here at the farm for a longtime," Jayaraman said. "He's a big horse and it took some time for him to come around. He doesn't have sprinter speed, and it took a while for him to get ready for races. [So], we were impressed that he did that well [at the Derby], especially considering it was just his third start."

Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux will have Summer Bird's mount for Saturday's race. The Cajun has enjoyed his practice time with the colt this week in Elmont.

"He breezed brilliantly," Desormeaux said of the Belmont Picks horse. "I think what impressed me the most about Summer Bird was his energy level. He came off the track happier than he went out, which is a great indication of a healthy, happy horse, as well as a fast one."

Summer Bird's trainer, Tim Ice, was very direct with what the horse's work this week over five-eighths did for his (Ice's) mindset.

"I'm very hopeful and I'm very confident," Ice said. 

The 141st Belmont Stakes will be run this Saturday, June 6th at Belmont Park. The race will be televised live on ABC; coverage begins at 5:00pm ET.
