The Birdstone sired Summer Bird is currently listed at 6 to 1 Breeders Cup odds to win the Classic by Breeders Cup Picks at online racebook Sportsbook.com. The 2009 Belmont Stakes winner has made himself one of the favorites tonight and also a potential Horse of the Year candidate with his stellar late season run. This evening's big event, the Breeders' Cup Classic, is set to get underway at 6:45pm ET at the Oak Tree at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. It will be broadcast live on ESPN. Summer Bird, like his half-brother Mine That Bird did in the Derby, shocked everyone by winning the third and final leg of Trainer Tim Ice, whose horse will be starting from the No. 3 post, feels Summer Bird will be a contender this evening, especially if the race goes according to plan. "I'm very happy with how he's going," Ice said. "As far as strategy, we'll have to see how he breaks; hopefully he'll break how he has in his previous races and be up close. It looks like the other speed is on the outside so I figure (jockey) Kent (Desormeaux) can get him ducked down there on the rail and maybe start moving his way out to make sure he's got room down the backside when he asks him to run." Kent Desormeaux, who rode Summer Bird to victory at the Belmont, will also have his mount in this evening's Classic. The 37 year old Louisiana native has 67 career Breeders' Cup starts. He has registered three wins at the event, the latest coming in 2007 when he guided Corinthian to first place in the Dirt Mile. the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes, back in June. That victory seemingly propelled the horse to greatness as he has won two of his three races, all Grade I, since. Summer Bird's latest conquest came in early October when he took first place at the Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes at Belmont Park.
