Horse Racing: Thoroughbred News Championship Saturday

by Alexander Banks on Thursday, September 21st, 2006

Horse Racing: Thoroughbred News Championship SaturdayAre you ready for some racing? I mean championship racing. I mean older horses running against the three-year olds for millions of dollars! Sprints, distance, turf and mid distance races on tracks across America.

How about October 7th for starters, five, count them five Grade l races will be run at Belmont Park on Championship Saturday.

Among them will be the race of the year until Breeders' Cup Day, the Jockey Club Gold Cup. This race at a mile-and-a-quarter for a purse of $750,000 will pit Bernardini, the top three-year old on the planet right now, against the older Invasor who has come from South America and been unbeaten in the Handicap class Invasor has also won three major stakes in the last three months against the best older horses on the east coast. What a race this will be.  Then, throw in Lava Man in the Breeders' Cup and the next month of racing reminds me of years gone by when we had several champion horses going at each other in the big money races week after week.

The other four Grade l races on October 7th are: The Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational $750,000, The Beldame for Fillies three and up for $600,000, The Flower Bowl Invitational for $600,000 for F/M, and the one I like the best, the Vosburgh Stakes for a purse of $400,000 for two-year-olds, which gives us a good look at next year’s Derby horses. So mark the date,10/07/06 at Belmont Park!

This Saturday, Lawyer Ron, a disappointment in the Derby back in May, will return to stakes action in the Louisiana Super Derby. His main rivals will be a Bob Baffert entry of Point Determined and Strong Contender. The race will be run at Louisiana Downs.
