Those of you who play horses don’t need me to tell you what is coming this Saturday at Churchill Downs in Kentucky. For those of you who are new to racing or BetUS , get your account ready. If you don’t have one, get one at BetUS.com. The greatest assembly of thoroughbred horses that I have ever seen is on hand for this year’s Breeders' Cup. Not only is the Classic (a $4 million dollar race) the most competitive ever, but the entire card of eight Cup races is of a quality the likes of which I have never seen in my 40+ years of racing! Lava Man (Classic) is getting a blitz of media that rivals Angelina Jolie; they are like Bees around the big horse. This is a problem race for Lava Man and his trainer Doug O’Neill. Lava Man is unbeaten this year and has earned $3.5 million dollars since he was claimed for $50,000 last August (by the way, that is record earnings for a horse that was claimed at any price). So why a problem you say? Well, Lava Man doesn’t fly well. The few times he has had to get on a plane to go to a race, he was terrible. In October of ’05, he flew to Belmont and ran 7th in an eight-horse field. In November of ‘05, he flew to Japan and finished 11th in a 12-horse field, and prior to all that he flew to Florida in January, 2005, for the Sunshine Million and ran 7th. Lava Man was 77 lengths out in those three races, all involving air travel. He was flown to Kentucky a few days early and is working well to date. Mike Matz, the trainer of Barbaro, is back at Churchill. This time, he is saddling a Maryland-based filly, Round Pond, the four-year-old will be running in the Distaff. Here are some recent workouts from Saturday’s contenders: CLASSIC Sun King 5F 101.1, Flower Alley 6F 115Breezing, Lawyer Ron 5F 102.3, Invasor 5F 101.4. SPRINT Bordonaro 4F 48.4, Siren Lure 4F 49Breezing. JUVENILE FILLIES Dreaming of Ana 4F 46.4, Bel Air Beauty 5F 101.0. I hope some of this info will help you! I’ll have some final thoughts on Friday. |
