UFC 93 Mauricio Rua vs Mark Coleman Prediction

by Scott Burgess on Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

UFC 93: Franklin vs Henderson kicks off, Saturday Jan 17, with a must see rematch between 2005 PRIDE Grand Prix Champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and UFC Hall of Famer Mark Coleman. These two fought in Japan (2005) where Mark Coleman upset Rua by breaking his arm in the first round. UFC oddsmakers at SBGglobal.com have Mauricio Rua as -380 moneyline favorite over Mark Coleman who is listed at +310. Get your UFC 93 Mauricio Rua vs Mark Coleman Prediction in now at SBGglobal.com

Mauricio "Shogun" Rua is known for his aggressive fighting style and for his extreme versatility. He has a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, from Nino Schembri, and is steeped in Muay Thai. He currently has a MMA record of 16 wins, 13 by KO, 1 submission and 3 losses. His most recent fight was at UFC 76 in which he lost to Forrest Griffin by submission (choke hold). Rua and Griffin battled in a close fight, with Rua having trouble with the larger Griffin. However, after Rua became exhausted during the second round, he was unable to keep pace against Griffin and repeatedly gave up his back while scrambling on the ground. Griffin locked in a rear naked choke, forcing Rua to tap out. Some blame his poor cardiovascular fitness on the fact that Rua suffered a knee injury during training for the fight. He re-injured himself during the fight and had to have elective surgery afterwards. He was supposed to have a rematch against Griffin but he ended up rupturing his ACL again and had to pull out of the fight. He has NOT fought since Sept 2007, almost a year and a half! Don’t expect him to go the distance if need be.

Thoughts on his opponent Mark Coleman- Coleman is a good opponent, and I respect him. I was his fan before I became a pro fighter, so I think he is a tough opponent and I respect him a lot.

Mark "The Hammer" Coleman is old-school fighter at age 44 with a 15-8-0 record, he’s a ground n pound fighter with good wrestling skills and lots of experience. He’s a professional wrestler, former NCAA collegiate wrestler and former Olympic amateur wrestler. The UFC Hall of Famer is credited as the inventor of the strategy that came to be known as ground-and-pound.  Unfortunately he’s 0-3 in his last three fights, where one was by KO, one Unanimous Decision and one Split Decision. His last fight was at UFC 18 (1999) where he fought Pedro Rizzo. Since then he has spent time losing in PRIDE FC, he fights maybe once a year, if that! Don’t expect grandpa to have a lot of stamina.

Thoughts on his opponent  Mauricio Rua- He’s a very well-rounded fighter, skilled in all areas.  Has very good standup and jiu-jitsu, normally great cardio.  It’s gonna be a stiff challenge, but one that I’m looking forward to and one that I’m prepared for.

The Bottom Line: Two oldies going at it, get out the tiger bomb there’s going to be some sore bodies after this fight. All I know is that Rua will be in better shape than Coleman who doesn’t fight as much as a pro should.
