The growing popularity of Mixed Martial Arts has led to numerous leagues being formed to showcase the sport, and EliteXC is one of them. Elite Xtreme Combat is trying to launch itself into the mainstream with Saturday's showcase event, Kimbo Slice versus Tank Abbott. BetOnline.com has made Kimbo Slice –460 odds favorite over Tank Abbott who is listed as a +290 underdog.
The chain of events leading to the fight began June 23, 2007, immediately after Slice defeated Ray Mercer. Slice challenged Abbott, a spectator, who quickly accepted. Kimbo Slice, 34, is a Miami, based street fighter. The 6'2”, 250-pounder gained notoriety via a series of fights that appeared online. He's since shed the “street fighter” title in favor of professional mixed martial arts. Slice started gaining attention in 2003 when he fought Sean Gannon. Gannon, a former Boston cop who trained in MMA, defeated Slice in the popular fight and actually went on to join Ultimate Fighting Championship after defeating Slice.
In June 2007, Kimbo Slice had his first sanctioned MMA fight, tangling with Mercer, a former WBO Heavyweight champion boxer. Slice won handily, ending the contest by choking out Mercer with a guillotine just 1:12 into the match.
Tank Abbott, 42, has a longer professional resume, but he developed his style in bars and calls himself a “street fighter.” The Huntington Beach, California native has an 8-10 record in UFC, though he never won a title. Some argue he's a better fighter than his record indicates, but that his poor conditioning has cost him. He also has experience in Pride, where he fought several times.
Both fighters have a lot at stake, but Slice looks like the clear favorite. Though Abbott is plenty strong, he's eight years Slice's senior and doesn't appear to be near the same physical condition. Still, as everyone knows, in MMA anything can happen. Abbott can throw bombs and knock anyone out in a single punch. Slice must be prepared for anything.
EliteXC gets things started Saturday at 9 PM EST from Miami, Florida. BetOnline.com can handle all your wagering needs. Visit their world-renowned sportsbook and get in on the action today!
