Current Light Heavyweight Champ Lyoto Machida won the title from Rashad Evans and his first title defense was against Mauricio Rua at UFC 104. Machida won a unanimous decision winning, 48-47 from all three judges, with one stating that Machida "landed the more damaging strikes throughout the fight" and was the more "effective aggressor". But controversy was soon to follow. Many members of the audience reacted negatively. UFC president Dana White, Royce Gracie, Rashad Evans, Wanderlei Silva, Vitor Belfort,, Rampage Jackson, Randy Couture, Thiago Silva, Jon Jones, Antonio Silva and Frank Trigg stated they felt that Rua won the fight. Writers for a number of sports websites/magazines also claimed they felt Rua had won. Machida, the UFC light heavyweight champion, is one of the most well-rounded fighters in the world. He will look to finish this fight the second time around utilizing his elusive and erratic fighting style with more aggression against Rua. When he was asked about his favorite technique, he replied, “That will be revealed on May 8th.”

Thoughts on his opponent Mauricio Rua – I will be ready to go all five rounds if that’s what it takes to retain my title. But my goal is to finish the fight before it comes to that. I don’t want to leave this fight in the judges’ hands – I’m ready for war.

Mauricio Rua has fought the best in the world with 18 wins and 15 by KO. With some of the best Muay Thai skills in the game (excellent leg kicks), Rua will look to implement a similar game plan as he did before by taking out Machida’s legs and finishing him on the feet. Rua had been more aggressive and had landed more blows to the head and legs than Machida, at UFC 104. Although Rua has lost two of his last four fights against high caliber fighters, such as Forrest Griffin and Machida. He’ll be sure to study lots of tape from his last battle with Machida. He must come out the gate swinging looking for a takedown and submission or a KO.

Thoughts on his opponent Lyoto Machida – Lyoto is a great fighter and a good person. He’s very well rounded, has good timing and distance on his strikes, and has a very solid wrestling base as well.
