Matt Hughes twice tried his luck against George St.Pierre, and lost both times. In UFC 65 he lost by TKO in the second round and in UFC 79 he lost by Submission (arm lock). In between these fights he did manage to get a win against Chris Lytle in UFC 68, which he won by Unanimous Decision after going three rounds. So it’s safe to say he can win against the lesser talented fighters and not the big guns. Chris Lytle had a record of 3-3 before his fight with Hughes, this fight was a setup to get Hughes next in line to fight St.Pierre. Now Hughes fights a fighter how is undefeated, hungry and talented. Hughes most notable wins throughout his career, the good ole days, are BJ Penn, Georges St. Pierre (early in his career), Frank Trigg (twice), Royce Gracie, Hayato Sakurai, Carlos Newton and Sean Sherk. Hughes is getting old and he’s more ready to retire or become a broadcaster.
Hughes thoughts on opponent Thaigo Alves: Thiago is coming off a big win against Karo Parisyan, so honestly, I’ll probably look to take him down, try to wear him out and get him a little slower because he’s got such quick punches, knees, and kicks. I think strength will come into play, me being bigger than he is, but I’m glad to fight Thiago.
Thaigo Alves is 5-0 and four of his last fights have ended in the second round by TKO or TKO stoppage. His last fight in UFC Fight Night he destroyed Karo Parisyan 34 seconds into the second round. In UFC 78 he beat Chris Lytle by TKO after he split him wide open forcing the doc to stop the fight. He’s only lost two fights in his last nine, he lost to Jon Fitch in UFC Fight Night after a TKO and in UFC Fight Night when he lost by Submission to Spencer Fisher. These losses were early in his career when he was trying to make it. He has proven himself in his last five fights and he’s ready to try the best or who was the best. Alves thoughts on opponent Matt Hughes: He has been the man for so many years and has defended it more than any other champ so I'm excited for this opportunity to fight him. But it’s time for him to step aside.
