Despite the somewhat fluky nature of that win, the 29 year old has gone on to prove he belongs in the promotion and, should he win tonight, in the discussion for a shot at the welterweight belt.
Thiago possesses a 13-1 professional record and he is 3-1 inside the Octagon, losing only to Jon Fitch (unanimous decision). The Brasilia native was especially impressive in his last fight, where he submitted Mike Swick via choke in the second round.
Martin Kampmann is a dangerous fighter as well, who, like Thiago, can get a win standing up or on the ground. The Las Vegas native has a 16-3 career record and a 7-2 mark in the UFC, where he has garnered wins by decision, TKO, and submission.
The 28 year old Kampmann last fought in January when he choked out Jacob Volkmann (a Thiago victim too – unanimous decision) at 4:03 in the first round. Kampmann has also won three of his last four fights with the only defeat coming at the hands of Paul Daley (TKO round one).
UFC 115 Prediction: This should be a good fight, but the edge goes to Thiago. The Brazilian's jiu-jitsu is superb, which means he is unlikley to fall into a one of Kampmann's submissions, and he has KO power in the standup game. Kampmann's two UFC losses have come by TKO.
