UFC 116 Results: The much hyped match between heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar and interim belt holder Shane Carwin lived up to its billing as the two giants provided fans with a thrilling battle last night in Vegas. The entertaining fight concluded with Lesnar, a -140 favorite at Bodog.com, submitting Carwin with an arm triangle choke at 2:19 in the second round to retain his title. UFC 116 Results also saw Chris Leben, a +165 underdog, get his second win in the last three weeks with a submission win against Yoshihiro Akiyama.
Brock Lesnar's long awaited return to the Octagon looked like it was going to be short lived as the
heavy handed Carwin landed a nasty uppercut early in the first round. The thunderous shot rocked Lesnar and sent the champ into full retreat as he practically ran to the cage to avoid further damage. Carwin, however, quickly followed, forcing Lesnar to the canvas, where the Colorado native reigned down blows on the stunned former wrestler.
The furious onslaught, which hurt Lesnar but did not finish him, may have been Carwin's undoing, though. The previously unbeaten fighter left little in the tank for round two, which was not a big surprise considering he had never gone to a second frame in his first 12 professional fights. Lesnar showed some heart in weathering the storm and he took advantage of Carwin's fatigue when he got the opportunity.
Lesnar scored a take down early in the second round against his sluggish counterpart. Once he had the interim champion on the ground, Lesnar moved quickly into the arm-triangle choke position while wrapped in Carwin's half-guard. About 30 seconds later he drew a tap from the challenger.
The win improved the South Dakota native's record to 5-1 and signaled to the rest of the heavyweight division that Lesnar can indeed deal with some adversity inside the cage and still emerge victorious.
After the fight Lesnar, who seldom issues compliments, threw a little bit of praise Carwin's way, but he reserved most of the acclaim for himself.
"He was tough, but I should have performed better in the first round and I'm not happy about it," Lesnar said. "A win is a win, but he was better than me in the first round. But I showed a lot of heart, I showed what a true champion can be."
