Anderson Silva (-370) vs Forrest Griffin (+300)

Anderson Silva (24-4-0) is in the midst of a nine fight win streak as he faces his toughest competitor in his last three fights. His last fight against Thales Leites, at UFC 97, was a five round disgrace. Anderson Silva defeated Thales Leites by Unanimous Decision, defending his Middleweight Championship and recording his UFC record 9th consecutive win in the octagon. Thales Leites is credited with being the only man in UFC history to take Silva the distance. This also was the longest fight Silva has ever had in the UFC, making it all the way through the fight. The crowd repeatedly booed his lackluster performance, bored expression, and frustrated attempts to goad his opponent into fighting, and in the 4th and 5th rounds took to dancing, lowering his guard and slapping his opponent without retaliation. Following the fight, Dana White has stated that he was "embarrassed" by Silva's performance, but still said that he believes him to be "the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world". At UFC 90 Silva fought what was supposed to be his toughest fight to date, but in the third round, Côté landed awkwardly on his right leg while throwing a kick and fell to the mat grasping his right knee in obvious pain. Referee Herb Dean declared the fight over when Côté could not continue, ruling the bout a TKO victory for Silva. Côté, however, became the first of Silva's UFC opponents to make it past the 2nd round. After his fight with Côté, Silva was criticized for seemingly avoiding contact during the bout. Dana White criticized Silva, saying: "I didn't understand Silva's tactics... It wasn't the Anderson Silva I've been watching the last two years." Silva now faces a fighter who doesn’t back away and likes to apply pressure to his opponent. Silva is weak on his back and Griffin has the skills to work the ground n pound.

Thoughts on his opponent Forrest Griffin - I’m very confident that I’m gonna go out there against Forrest and we’re gonna give the fans the type of fight everybody’s hoping for. Somebody’s gonna get knocked out. It’s not gonna go to a decision. He’s gonna come in to fight to try to knock me out, and I’m definitely gonna go in there to knock him out.

Forrest Griffin (16-5-0) is just the fighter to truly test the Spider. Despite losing his last fight to Rashad Evans at UFC 92, Griffin isn’t about to roll over. He has a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to counter against Silva, who is weak on his back. He has notable wins over Quinton Jackson, Mauricio Hua and Hector Ramirez. Griffin won the light heavyweight belt by defeating Quinton Jackson at UFC 86. Griffin was viewed as a heavy underdog by many going into the fight; Griffin faced Jackson in a hard fought battle that was given "Fight of the Night" honors by UFC president Dana White. Griffin won a unanimous decision victory and became the new undisputed UFC Light Heavyweight Champion. Griffin looked to be in trouble in the first round after being dropped by an uppercut, but he rallied in the second round, and landed a damaging leg kick early that severely wobbled Jackson. Griffin followed up with ground strikes and cemented his control, preventing Jackson from mounting any significant offense for the rest of the round. Griffin went on to win the match by unanimous decision. He would go on to lose his title against Rashad Evans at UFC 92. After Griffin controlled most of the first two rounds with effective striking, Evans defeated Griffin by TKO in the third round with ground and pound from inside the champion's guard. The loss was Griffin's third loss since entering the UFC. During the fight Griffin broke his hand, sidelining him for a few months. Griffin is a fighter with heart and is not going to be scared going against Silva. He’ll go toe to toe with anyone and if he can expose Silva’ back it could go Griffin’ way.

Thoughts on his opponent Anderson Silva - What Anderson Silva needs is to be pushed, and I’m certainly the guy to do that. I’m gonna fight hard, I’m gonna fight smart, I’m not gonna pitter-patter, I’m not gonna run. I’m gonna fight. Am I the guy to beat Anderson Silva? Why not, somebody’s gotta do it – it might as well be me.
