UFC 118 Results: On a night when mixed martial arts scored a big victory over boxing (if one were to swallow the billing they could interpret it that way), lightweight champion Frankie "The Answer" Edgar answered his detractors and successfully defended his title against former champ BJ Penn. Edgar, who took the crown from Penn at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi, came into last night's fight a +250 underdog at online bookmaker Bodog.com. In the co-main event, former UFC heavyweight champion Randy "The Natural" Couture, a -575 moneyline favorite, won via submission over boxing great James "Lights Out" Toney.
BJ Penn does not like the 10 point system used to score fights, and, at least when he's facing Frankie Edgar, his sentiment
is understandable. For the second time Edgar outpointed him, using great movement and precision striking to score another unanimous decision victory over the man many consider the best lightweight fighter ever to step in the Octagon.
In the lead up to UFC 118 Penn insinuated that Edgar's April win was a hollow one, a product of poor judgment. He also expressed his unabashed feeling that Edgar is not his equal.
"They don't have much to work with, they only got Frankie Edgar," Penn said in reference to the champion's camp. "They don't have the knock out king, they don't have the submission king, they only got Frankie Edgar."
Penn changed his tune last night, though, after the New Jersey native scored a decisive 50-45 win.
"Frankie fought a great fight, he's the man," Penn said. "He fought me twice and he walked away with the decision twice. Much respect."
For Edgar's part, he just wanted to "make that point". And make it he did, in unanimous fashion.
James "Lights Out" Toney's first foray into mixed martial arts lasted exactly 3:19 as two time UFC light heavyweight champion Randy Couture submitted the current IBA heavyweight champ via an arm-triangle choke in the first round.
Randy Couture took Toney to the mat with a single leg take down about five seconds into the fight and proceeded to batter him from the mount with some old school ground and pound. Toney looked clueless as to how to defend Couture's assault, his hips leaving the canvas maybe on one occasion.
Couture, as usual, was a gracious post-fight competitor, saying if the two engaged in a boxing match, "James would probably knock me out in the first round."
It wasn't a boxing match, though, and Couture was not the one doing all the berating and name calling, so, it was nice to see Toney go "Lights Out".
