 Randy Couture will defend his UFC Heavyweight title and his legacy against Gabriel Gonzaga Saturday night on PPV. At the weight-in Couture came looking diesel at 228 lbs. Gonzaga weighed in at 252. Gonzaga was considered an opponent until he landed a vicious head kick that flattened Mirko Cro Cop. Gonzaga‘s talent is undisputed. Gabriel is a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu black belt that is fierce on the ground. The style match-up favors Gonzaga as Randy’s bread and butter, the ground and pound could be muted by Gonzaga’s submissions. Couture has seen it all though, and holds a huge edge in experience. Couture also can hold his own striking but the edge in strikes would also have to favor Gonzaga slightly.
Randy Couture is a legend but Gabriel Gonzaga is a big, young and strong ground fighter. While the savvy Couture can never be counted out you have to believe that Gabriel will just be a little to much at this stage of Randy’s career. The oddsmakers originally placed Couture as a -160 favorite but the money has all moved on Gonzaga pushing the price on Randy Couture to +115 odds at Bodog.com. That’s a 65 point sway as the wiseguys anted up on what is perceived as a line tilted toward Couture’s popularity. On the official UFC website however 73% of voters have picked Randy.
