UFC 119 Results: Chalk ruled last night in Indianapolis as nine of the 11 fights at UFC 119 were won by the man odds makers at BetUS.com had listed as the favorite. One of those fighters just so happened to be Frank Mir, who took out veteran Mirko Cro Cop with a third round knockout in the night's main event. Ryan Bader, a -175 moneyline favorite, also won, overcoming Antonio 'Lil Nog' Nogueira in an important light heavyweight tussle. Former lightweight champion Sean Sherk also inserted himself back in the title mix at 155lbs. with an upset, split decision victory over Evan Dunham.
Frank Mir desperately needed a win at Conseco Fieldhouse last night in order to maintain his relevence in the heavyweight
division, but for almost three rounds he looked like a bored man rather than a possessed one. However, with less than a minute left in the fight, Mir connected with a standing knee that instantly put the Croatian's lights out.
The stunning finish salvaged an otherwise boring fight and it also kept Mir within striking distance of arch nemesis Brock Lesner and the rest of the division's top fighters.
Despite the amazing knock out of the famed Cro Cop, the Las Vegas native was not pleased with his effort.
"I got really frustrated because with pushing him against the cage, I drilled so much on what to do from there, and I was making mistakes I wasn't making a month ago that I thought I had corrected," Mir said. "So halfway through the fight, I'm actually bitching at myself…I think that was part of my problem. I needed to clear my mind more."
Ryan Bader solidified his position in the light heavyweight ranks, improving his record to 13-0 with the unanimous decision win against Nogueira. Bader showed his usual takedown skills, but also held his own standing up with the Brazilian. The Arizona native will now, mostly likely, face the winner of the Lyoto Machida/Rampage Jackson fight, which will take place later this fall.
Sean Sherk also moved into the lightweight title picture by taking out the previously undefeated Dunham. While Sherk did anything but dominate the fight, he showed enough get the final tally in his advantage. Perhaps a rematch with Kenny Florian could be next for the "Muscle Shark".
