Jake Shields enters this evening's fight with all the pedigree one could hope to muster. In addition to his former status as 
Strikeforce's top middleweight, Shields earned All American honors as a college wrestler and he is Cesar Gracie Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt. Oh, and he is presently riding a 15 fight win streak that had its beginnings in November of 2005.
Shields last fought in April when he successfully defended his Strikeforce belt against former UFC fighter and Olympic wrestler Dan Henderson. Shields earned a five round unanimous decision in that battle, using his high-level jiu-jitsu and wrestling to dominate "Hendo" on the ground.
The 31 year old Shields, who owns a 25-4-1 professional record, cannot match the standup skills of Kampmann; however, his ground game is so superior that he has used it to dispose of a number of top strikers, including Paul Daley (armbar submission), Mike Pyle (rear-naked choke), Carlos Condit (unanimous decision), and Yushin Okami (majority decision).
Martin Kampmann, who hails from Aarhus, Denmark, earned the 17th win of his career in June with an impressive victory over Brazil's Paulo Thiago. The 28 year old's highly technical strike game kept Thiago off balance the entire three rounds, leading to a final score of 30-27 in favor of the "Hitman".
Kampmann, despite his standup pedigree, also knows a thing or two about ground fighting, having garnered four of his eight UFC wins via submission. And it is his overall skill set that makes him, perhaps, the most dangerous fighter Shields has faced in quite some time if not ever.
