UFC 107 will take place at 10pm ET tonight at the FedEX Forum in Memphis, Tennessee. The big event, which features a battle for the lightweight title between BJ "The Prodigy" Penn and Diego "Nightmare" Sanchez, can be seen live on Pay-Per-View. The undercard is stacked with several intriguing matchups as former heavyweight champion Frank Mir faces top contender Cheick Kongo and top welterweight Jon Fitch squares off against up-and-comer Mike Pierce. Online bookmaker SPORTSBETTING.com has Penn listed as a -300 moneyline favorite in the UFC 107 Odds main event.
Hawaii native BJ Penn has owned the lightweight division in the UFC, beating the likes of Jens Pulver, Joe Stevenson, Sean
Sherk, and Kenny Florian, in route to a perfect 6-0 record in the weight class. Penn's latest conquest came against the aforementioned Florian at UFC 101 in early August. The 30 year old fighter submitted "KenFlo" at 3:54 in the fourth round, marking his second successful lightweight title defense.
Penn, who was at one time the UFC welterweight champion, enters tonight's fight with a 14-5-1 professional record. He has four wins in his last five appearances in the Octagon, the lone loss coming against current welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre. Three of Penn's last four victories have come via choke submission, the other win was a third round TKO of former lightweight champion Sean Sherk.
While Penn has faced some great 155lbs. fighters, Sanchez might be his toughest lightweight opponent to date. The ever confident Hawaiian did not seem shaken by that prospect, merely acknowledging that Sanchez would be a challenge.
"I can't wait to defend the title," Penn said. "I know what kind of competitor Diego Sanchez is and I am training very hard. This will be a good test."
Diego Sanchez has been barrelling toward a matchup with Penn since joining the lightweight division after a September 2007 loss to Jon Fitch. "Nightmare" is a perfect 4-0 since dropping down from the welterweight ranks, beating David Bielheden, Luigi Fioravanti, Joe Stevenson, and Clay Guida. The Albuquerque native, who is adept both standing up and on the ground, is 10-2 inside the Octagon and 23-2 as a professional mixed martial artist.
Sanchez indicated that fight fans should enjoy this skirmish while also predicting a win for himself.
"It's gonna be a good fight, we're both gonna bring everything we have, and I'm gonna have more," Sanchez said.
