Former UFC welterweight champion Georges "Rush" St. Pierre (15-2) is ready to drop the "former" from his title and reclaim the top spot in the 170-pound division. He’s facing arch-rival Matt Serra (9-4) in the main event of UFC 83: Serra vs. St. Pierre 2, St.Pierre says he can't wait to step inside the octagon on Saturday, April 19 in his hometown of Montreal. Sportsbook.com have Georges St. Pierre as -450 odds favorite against underdog Matt Serra +300 odds.
"It's a dream come true, it's a great opportunity for me to shine in front of my people by winning the world title, and that's the guy I've wanted to fight for a long time, too, because he beat me. I can't wait, it's going to be fun."
The first time Serra and St. Pierre fought, almost one year ago in UFC 69, GSP was the huge favorite. But Matt Serra shocked all of Canada, and the world, when he knocked out GSP 3:25 into the first round. Serra first caught St. Pierre with a damaging right hook, and then he executed a flurry of punches as GSP struggled to recover. GSP eventually fell to the mat, where Serra continued striking until the referee stopped the fight. Serra became the UFC Welterweight Champion. This was considered a tremendous upset, as Matt Serra was an 11-to-1 underdog against St. Pierre. This would be Serra’s last fight due to back injuries, Saturdays fight against GSP will be his first in one year.
They were set to fight again in UFC 79, but Serra had back issues and the fight was put off. Until Matt Hughes stepped up and said “I’ll fight him”. GSP defeated Hughes via submission (armbar) at 4:52 of the second round to become the Interim UFC Welterweight Champion. GSP thanked the UFC for the interim belt but took it off stating that "the real champion is Matt Serra and until I get my belt back I am not going to consider myself champion".
Heading into the rematch, St. Pierre is promising to show his fans something new."People will see some stuff that I've never shown before," he says, "some stuff people have never seen in MMA. It's going to be interesting. Don't blink because the fight can finish very early, or it can go to the distance, but don't blink."
Most notable wins for GSP: Matt Hughes(2), Josh Koscheck, BJ Penn, Sean Sherk, Frank Trigg and Karo Parisyan Most notable wins for Matt Serra: GSP, Chris Lytle, Ivan Menjivar and Jeff Curran
UFC 83: George St.Pierre vs Matt Serra 2 When: April 19, 2008 10:00 PM ET Line: Sportsbook.com Pick: St. Pierre -450 The Bottom Line: GSP is pumped and excited to be fighting in Canada, in his hometown, and he’s going to put on a show that will be talked about for a while. He’s the most athletic well rounded pound for pound best fighter in the UFC. Matt Serra hasn't fought in a year and his conditioning and stamina will questionable. Rich Franklin (22-3) vs Travis Lutter (9-4)
After two big loses to Anderson Silva, Rich Franklin is ready to stake his claim in the UFC as the next great contender. Franklin was the last UFC middleweight champion before Anderson Silva and Travis Lutter was a previous #1 contender. This will be a very important fight for both fighters’ futures in the UFC. Oddsmakers at BetUS.com have Rich Franklin as 400-moneyline fav over Travis Lutter who is listed as +300 underdog. Get your UFC 83 Prediction in now at BetUS.com
Since the first loss to Silva in UFC 64, Franklin beat Jason MacDonald in UFC 68 by TKO in the second after MacDonald’s corner threw in the towel. His next fight was UFC 72 in which he defeated Yushin Okami by unanimous decision in a three round yawning match. This win made him the # 1 contender for the UFC Middleweight Championship. Something he owned before losing to Silva in UFC 64. He tested his luck again against Silva in UFC 77 and he was pummeled beyond belief. He lost by TKO in the second round, just 1:07 in. His stock in the UFC is fading fast if he can’t beat some quality fighters. His last two fights before Silva were set up fights so he could challenge for the Title. The UFC sees him as a fan favorite, which means big ratings. He has notable wins over Travis Fulton, Marvin Eastman, Jorge Rivera, Evan Tanner (twice), Ken Shamrock, Edwin Dewees, Nathan Quarry, David Loiseau, Jason MacDonald and Yushin Okami. Rich is a well rounded fighter with excellent striking capabilities.
Thoughts on Opponent: Travis has a very solid ground game, and I believe he will look to take the fight to the ground. He is a patient fighter, so I will have to be careful not to make mistakes in the later rounds.
Travis Lutter is an American born fighter steeped in BBJ who got his start in the UFC by winning the reality show The Ultimate Fighter. On the semi-final episode, Travis Lutter defeated Pete Sell to move on to the finals set for November 11, 2006. At the finale of The Ultimate Fighter 4, Lutter defeated Patrick Côté with an armbar in the first round. With this victory, Lutter became the challenger for Anderson Silva's Middleweight title. On the day of the weigh-in, one day before the fight at UFC 67, Lutter failed to make weight. He weighed-in at 187 pounds on the first attempt, and 186.5 two hours later on his second attempt. Because of his failure to meet the required 185 pounds, his match with Silva was changed to a three-round, non-title bout. Regardless, Lutter lost the bout to Silva via submission due to triangle choke and elbow strikes in the second round. He’s not a very dissaplined fighter but he has great submission skills.
Thoughts on Opponent: It is an honor to fight Rich. He is a former UFC champion and it is a great privilege to fight him.
UFC 83: Rich Franklin vs Travis Lutter When: April 19, 2008 10:00 PM ET Line: BetUS.com Pick: Rich Franklin -400
The Bottom Line: Both fighters will come out swinging as the winner still has a career in the UFC, while the other might as well retire. Should be all Franklin, they keep giving him easy fighters to fight. Get your UFC 83 Prediction in now at BetUS.com and receive a 10% sign-up bonus on your initial deposit. |

This Tuesday, April 15, visit bodoglife.net/fight to see middleweights Eric Lawson (3-1) and Josh Neal (2-1) climb into the Strikeforce cage in front of a packed house at San Jose's HP Pavilion during a recent Bodog Fight-sponsored event. This fight features one of the most stunning submission escapes you are likely to see, with the escapee surviving a two-minute triangle choke before turning the tables on his opponent. Which fighter performs like Houdini? The answer lies within The Vault. Catch another all-new episode of The Vault on Saturday, April 19, as American heavyweight "Big" Eric Pele (11-3) travels to Russia to battle newcomer Akhmet Sultanov in Bodog Fight: Russia vs. USA II. The Las Vegas native deserves credit for being brave enough to take on the Russian in front of a hostile crowd at MegaSport Ice Arena in Moscow, but "Big" Eric has never been short on guts. The 340-pound Pele earned a shocking knockout victory over the equally massive Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva in 2006 at the original Bodog Fight: Russia vs. USA in Vancouver, Canada. That loss remains as the only blemish on the Brazilian's record. Pele followed up this performance by heading to St. Petersburg, Russia to take on top-10 heavyweight (and Fedor's little brother) Aleksander Emelianenko in Bodog Fight: Clash of the Nations . Unfortunately for Pele he succumbed to the Russian's powerful strikes four minutes into the first round. Will his return to Russia prove more successful? Open The Vault to find out. Bodog Fight: The Vault offers streaming video of all-new, never-before-seen fights each Tuesday and Saturday, commercial free. Each webisode is fully downloadable and iPod-ready, featuring a previously unaired bout from the Bodog Fight archives. Last week, fans of Bodog Fight's groundbreaking online mixed martial arts series The Vault saw middleweight champion Trevor Prangley advance to the finals of a four-man elimination tournament at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. The hard-hitting South African earned a controversial decision over Hawaiian Falaniko "Niko" Vitale (24-8) in the tournament opener, when an eye injury caused doctors to stop the fight after two closely fought rounds. The three ringside judges scored the bout 19-19, 19-19, and 20-18 for Vitale, ruling the bout a majority draw. That meant the decision would go to the referee who, with Vitale injured and unable to progress further in the tournament, awarded the fight to Prangley (17-4). This Tuesday, April 8, visit bodoglife.net/fight to see Prangley square off against Brazilian Jorge Santiago in the tournament final. As seen on The Vault, Santiago (15-7) scored a devastating knockout over Sean Salmon (14-5) just seconds into their opening round fight, to earn a date with Prangley in the finals. Who will win the first-ever sanctioned MMA tournament in the Golden State? The answer lies within The Vault. Don't miss another episode of Bodog Fight: The Vault on Saturday, April 12, featuring a middleweight bout between Florida's Emyr "Shark" Bussade (10-4) and Russia's Andrei Semenov (26-9-2).
