UFC 73: Anderson Silva vs. Nate Marquardt PreviewUFC 73 viewers get to see two submission masters collide when UFC Middleweight champion Anderson ”Spider” Silva (18-4) faces off against unheralded Nate “The Great“ Marquardt (28-6-1). Bodog.com has Anderson Silva as a slight -160 odds favorite to Nate Marquardt at +130 odds.

Wyoming’s Marquardt, 28, has done most of his fighting in Japan so he is unknown to most UFC fans. Nate Marquardt is a physically gifted and poised competitor with a well rounded game. He could be considered the Pernell Whitaker of the UFC for his ability to pitch a shutout with his defense.

Having trained in Albuquerque, New Mexico for his UFC 73 fight under the tutelage of Trainer Greg Jackson, Marquardt has been sharpening his skills in a world class environment. Many people in the fight game are giving him an excellent chance to pull off an upset against the 32 year old Anderson Silva.

Anderson is coming off a tough win over Ultimate Fighter 4 winner Travis Lutter. Silva had a close fight with Lutter in his last outing so some are suspicious that his skills are fading. Oddsmakers though tend to put too much emphasis on one’s last fight.

Look at Silva’s career, he has fought and defeated the best with consistency. Anderson Silva is a beast. He can do it all. Silva will beat you by submission or he can bust guys up with various strikes. Brazilian Silva has honed his skills and is as good now as ever. One fight doesn’t mean squat in my book.

Marquardt has been hurt before from strikes and no matter how defensive Marquardt fights Silva will be attacking aggressively. I believe that Marquardt can make this fight close and he has waited a long time to show his skills on the big stage but Anderson Silva is just too nasty for him right now.
