2012 Summer Olympics: Men’s 200m Butterfly Odds & Predictions

by Scott Burgess on Monday, July 30th, 2012

Michael Phelps takes to the water tonight, Monday July 30th, as he competes for gold in the men’s 200m butterfly final, at 7:49 p.m. on Tuesday. Michael Phelps had no trouble moving into the semifinals of the men’s 200-meter butterfly during preliminary races today. They’ll swim in semifinal heats tonight, starting at 8:32 p.m. (London time). Olympic oddsmakers have Michael Phelps listed as 8/13 odds favorite to win gold in the Men’s 200m Butterfly. Let’s take a look at who can challenge Phelps. Be sure to make your Men’s 200m Butterfly predictions before they hit the water.

Michael Phelps (8/13) practically owns this event, having won the 200m butterfly at every Olympic Games and World Championships he has swam in since 2001. But after Sunday’s impressive exertions in the second leg of the 4x100m freestyle relay final in which the United States took silver, Phelps took it easy, finishing in a time of 1min 55.53sec – more than four seconds outside his world record – and behind Austrian Dinko Jukic (1:54.79) and compatriot Tyler Clary (1:54.96). The time, the fifth fastest overall over the five heats, ensured Phelps had safe passage to Monday night’s semi-finals.

Takeshi Matsuda (5/1) of Japan has been one of the most consistent 200 butterfly swimmers in the world. At the 2011 World Championships, Matsuda won the gold medal behind Phelps, and at the 2009 World Championships he earned bronze. Matsuda also won bronze at the 2008 Olympic Games, and he will head into the 2012 Olympic Games with the second-fastest time this year (1:54.01). Matsuda will likely use his veteran experience to help him chase the defending Olympic champion.

Nick D’Arcy (20/1) has been talked up as a challenger to Phelps in this event. But the Australian looked far from impressive as he finished fifth, although in time that was good enough to get him through. D’Arcy was dropped from the Australian team for Beijing in 2008 after punching a team-mate, Simon Cowley, at a Sydney nightclub while celebrating his Olympic selection.

The Bottom Line: Phelps hasn’t looked the same at these Olympics and is likely to miss out on gold. Phelps has yet to finish first in a preliminary race at the London Olympics.
