2012 Summer Olympics: Men’s 200m Individual Medley Odds & Predictions

by Scott Burgess on Thursday, August 2nd, 2012

Phelps vs Lochte at the 2012 Summer Olympics. For the final time, two of the best swimmers of this generation will face each other. With a gold medal on the line once again, this could be the most anticipated event of London 2012. Olympic oddsmakers have Ryan Lochte (USA) listed as 8/15 odds favorite to win gold in the Men’s 200m Individual Medley. Let’s take a look at who can challenge Lochte. Be sure to make your Men’s 200m Individual Medley predictions before they hit the water.

Ryan Lochte – decisively won Round 1 versus Phelps when he took home the gold in the grueling 400-meter IM, beating his rival by more than four seconds. Lochte dominated the 200-meter IM during qualification and the semifinals. He won his qualifying heat with a second-best overall time of 1:58.03, while his semifinal time of 1:56.13 was the best.

Lochte can win all of the qualifying and semifinal heats he wants. That’s not what matters. What matters is saving gas in the tank for the race that actually counts. At this point, Lochte has to think there’s no way he can be stopped. That makes this the perfect time for Phelps to shock him and prove that the grizzled veteran isn’t quite as grizzled as many assumed.

Michael Phelps – does not have to prove himself as much as Lochte. With the all-time Olympic medal record in tow, everything else for Phelps from today forward is just gravy. Phelps garnered that record-breaking 19th medal he had set his sights on before embarking on this journey to London, he finished second in the 200-meter butterfly and he was solid during the 200-meter IM qualifier and semifinal.

We are four years removed from Phelps’ historic eight golds in the pool, but Americans have taken notice of swimming again now that another American is challenging Phelps for the title of world’s best swimmer. His name is Ryan Lochte. Nobody will simply hand the top honors to Lochte upon Phelps’ retirement. If American swimming wants to stay in the public eye, then Lochte must win every race remaining for which he has qualified in these Olympics in dominating fashion.

The Bottom Line: I like Phelps. Want to dominate the books this season with some of the best Summer Olympic Picks experts in the business? Then sign up right now and get Summer Olympic Picks Free!
