Roger Federer, the former World No.1 tennis player, is no longer the favorite to win gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The world number one turns 27 on the day of the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony and he will have to rediscover his A-game after suffering surprise defeats in the Toronto and Cincinnati hardcourt Masters events. “The last couple of weeks have not been good, I lost matches I should never lost. They hurt, but I did not play bad by losing" said Federer on Thursday. Federer says the only way he can salvage his bad year, to his standards, is to win gold for his country. The Olympics have not been very favorable to Federer in the past. In 2000 he lost a semi-final to Tommy Haas and then let a bronze medal slip through his fingers against Frenchman Arnaud Di Pasquale. In 2004 he lost in the second round to Tomas Berdych. Rafael Nadal (ESP) has won 32 of his past 33 matches on three types of surfaces, and most know by now that he claimed the French Open and Wimbledon in impressive fashion. Susceptible on hard courts in the past, the 22-year-old cruised to the Toronto Masters title and earned the No. 1 ranking last week in Cincinnati, reaching the semifinals before losing to third-ranked Novak Djokovic. Djokovic blew Nadal off the court in the opening set. Nadal lost to Andy Murray at the 2004 Olympics and he might get to face him again if they make it past the first three rounds.
