 The 2008 Beijing Olympics are officially underway. Usain Bolt broke the World Record with a dominating time of 9.72 seconds and completely blitzed World Champion Tyson Gay. Although he broke the World Record, in New York, he did lose to Asafa Powell in Stockholm partly due to a bad start. The only thing stopping him from a gold medal is another bad start. Usain Bolt is 7/5 odds favorite to win gold at the 100m dash.
Asafa Powell of Jamaica put on a superb performance over the weeks building up to the Olympics. He beat Bolt by a time of 9.88 seconds, followed by a run of 9.94 in London to take first place. On a bad note he is known for underachieving in major meets, he finished fifth at the 2004 Olympics and third at the 2007 World Championships. It’s hard to see Powell beating Bolt, but regardless Asafa Powell is 2/1 odds to win gold.
Tyson Gay of U.S.A suffered an injury during the U.S. Olympic Trails and it’s not known if it’ll heal in time for his first race. Regardless he did run a 9.77 and a windy 9.68 at the U.S. Trials. If he’s in peak performance by race time, he might be able to outrun Powell. He’s experienced at major meets, which might give him the upperhand over Bolt. Tyson Gay is listed at 9/5 odds to win gold.
