Michael Phelps conquered the impossible by completing his quest for a record eighth gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Phelps took his final and historic gold at approximately 11:10am on Saturday morning in the 4x100m Medley Relay. Joining the Baltimore, MD native on the relay team were Aaron Peirsol, Brendan Hansen, and Jason Lezak. The US team recorded a world record time of 3:29.34. The US team was heavily favored to win the relay and betting lines at BetUS.com had them at -2000 odds. No other teams were given odds to win the race; it was the US team or the Field at +800 odds. The event capped a whirlwind week for Phelps and the Beijing Olympics have cemented him as the greatest Olympian of all-time. Phelps now has 14 career Olympic gold medals and seven individual world record times. However, the 23 year olds plans for Olympic history were nearly derailed twice. The first nail biting moment occurred in the 4x100m Freestyle Relay. It took an incredible last leg by Jason Lezak to defeat the French team by .08 seconds. The second episode took place yesterday when Phelps just edged Serbia's Milorad Cavic by .01 seconds.
