The best way to improve at anything is to do it, and Texas holdem poker is no exception. However, since Texas holdem is often played for real money, it's understandable if you want to read up on the game before diving into one. Some pros will say they never read a poker book before turning pro and did everything on instinct. Even if this is true, it probably meant a much harder learning curve, with more money lost through trial and error than was necessary. Some of the early pros didn't have books to help them. You do, and you can help yourself achieve poker success if you take advantage of them.

Point-Spreads.com and Bodog have teamed up for a special private WSOP Qualifier online poker tournament this Saturday, June 7th at 2:05 PM. The first-place winner will be awarded T$270, just enough credits to get in to the “Main Event Semifinal – 5 Seats Guaranteed” tournament this Sunday, June 8th, without having to dish out any money.

Beginner Books - If you just need to learn the rules of Texas holdem, there are plenty of books out there for that and you can find them in almost any bookstore. The rules to Texas holdem are relatively simple and you can find them online as well as in books. Phil Gordon a WSOP main event finalist and former host of Celebrity Poker Showdown, has some good starter tomes on Texas holdem. If you're just looking to learn the basic rules, finding an author who you feel is clear and readable is a lot more important than finding one with multiple tournament wins or cash game success stories under his belt. Try to mix the reading with some practice. The easiest is probably to play some poker online, if you use public computer no download poker is a good option.

Strategy Guides - If you're ready to move to the next level, you'll want to pick up some books by David Sklansky. Sklansky's "Theory of Poker" is considered one of the seminal works on not just Texas holdem, but all poker, and will help you understand the math aspects of the game and the critical concepts such as pot odds, premium hands and the gap concept. You also may want to pick up Doyle Brunson's Super/System. Probably the most famous poker book, this guide contains tips not just for no-limit Texas holdem, but also for a wide variety of poker games from specialists at those games.

Tournament Books - For a long time, books by tournament pros T.J. Cloutier and Tom McEvoy were considered the gold standard of tournament strategy books, and they still are great choices for those looking to improve their tournament results. Today though, anyone looking to become a tournament pro must pick up the three-volume set: "Harrington on Holdem." Written by World Series of Poker and World Poker Tour Champion Dan Harrington, these books use themes similar to those employed in chess training books to turn any amateur into a player with pro potential.
